Virtual camera for Google Meet
Google Meet runs in the browser and reads your system camera list, so a virtual camera shows up next to your real webcam. CamLooper fills that camera with a video file of your choosing — no browser extension required.
Set it up in Google Meet
Install and start CamLooper
Install from the download page, load your clip and press Start so the virtual camera is live before you join.
Reload the Meet tab
The browser caches the device list per tab. Reload after starting CamLooper so Chrome picks up the new camera.
Select it in Meet
On the pre-join screen or under Settings → Video, choose CamLooper Virtual Camera from the camera dropdown.
Meet needs camera permission granted to the site before any device names appear — if the dropdown shows blank entries, allow camera access and reload. More detail: using a video as your webcam in Teams, Meet and Discord.
Why a virtual camera beats a virtual background
No edge artefacts
Meet's background blur has to segment you from your room in real time, and it frays around hair and hands. A pre-recorded clip has no matte to get wrong.
Lighter on your laptop
Segmentation runs continuously on your CPU or GPU. Playing a file back is far cheaper, which matters on a long call.
You choose the frame
Record once, in good light, framed how you want — then reuse it. Nothing behind you needs tidying before a call again.
Google Meet virtual camera questions
Do I need a Chrome extension?
No. CamLooper installs a system-level camera device, so any browser that can list your webcam can list CamLooper too. There is nothing to add to Chrome itself.
Is CamLooper free for Google Meet?
Yes — free to use, including commercially, with no account and no watermark. In-app ads fund development and never touch your video.
CamLooper doesn't appear in Meet's camera list. Why?
Reload the tab: Chrome caches the device list, so a camera that appeared after the page loaded won't be listed. Make sure CamLooper is running and the site has camera permission. If it's still missing, see virtual camera not showing up.
Does it work in Firefox and Edge?
Yes. The virtual camera is a system device, so any browser that supports Meet will offer it in the camera picker.
Does my video leave my computer?
Only as part of the call itself, exactly like a real webcam feed. CamLooper decodes the file locally with FFmpeg — it uploads nothing, and there's no telemetry on what you play.
What this is not for
Don't use CamLooper for proctored exams, identity or KYC verification, job interviews, or to impersonate anyone. It exists so you can meet a camera-on requirement without broadcasting your home to a room of strangers.
